Schiller stressed the need to create a noble character only through art, because art is not only a tough attitude towards his contemporares, but also in the quest, to purify them so that they gain enlightenment. This way they will not feel excluded or capricious or frivolous and wild; but rather move slowly and gradually to remove these difficulties from their actions, as well as in their minds, and finally achieve the goal of enlightenment.
席勒強調，要造就高尚的性格只能通過藝術，因為藝術不只是以嚴峻的態度對待他的同時代人，而是在遊戲中通過美來淨化他們，使他們在閒暇時得到娛樂，不知不覺地從娛樂中排除任性，輕浮和粗野，再慢慢地從他們的行動乃至意像中逐步清除這些毛病，最後達到高尚的目的！
